WOODLAND HEIGHTS

Woodland Heights, part of the Houston area known as “The Heights,” was founded in 1907. Woodland Heights’ homes were primarily modest Arts and Crafts bungalows and Queen Anne cottages rather than the larger Victorian structures found in the Houston Heights. The neighborhood was developed by William A. Wilson and was, along with the Houston Heights, an independent streetcar suburb prior to annexation by the city in the early 20th-century.

Heavily deed restricted and less than four miles from downtown, Woodland Heights is one of Houston’s most desirable places to live. In addition to its impressive number of restored original structures, Woodland Heights features canopies of mature oak trees along Bayland Avenue and several other neighborhood streets.

New construction in Woodland Heights generally follows neighborhood vernacular styles. Prices for restored cottages and bungalows start in the mid $200s and new construction prices range upwards from $450,000.

Lights in the Heights is staged in Woodland Heights every year right before Christmas and is one of Houston’s premier holiday events. The festival has grown from an encouragement to neighborhood residents to decorate their houses to a major event with a parade, performance art and ever-more elaborate decorations.
